Cosmos X2 DSi Ware Game Review

On Monday, a long wait will be over. I have know this game for years, ever since it was a homebrew GBA title. More precisely, I know Saturnine Games and it's founder, Ed. I've seen this game go through many versions, and while I've worked with Ed on several projects, I had no input on this one--which is why I feel right about doing an actual review.

This game, while it looks like a standard shooter, is actually quite different from the Gradius or Cave games we all know and love. This game is very difficult, and from a distance it looks and sounds like a shooter, but in actually playing it you will see it is very different in execution. The action is not very fast, nor are there that many enemies. You can sustain multiple hits thanks to your life bar. The trade off is that you only get one life.

Just one.

This set up dramatically changes the way the game is played. Instead of a game of REACTION, this is a game of THINKING and PLANNING. You choose a set of two out of 3 possible ships at the beginning. None of these ships is strong enough to endure a level on its own. By switching ships, the inactive vessel can heal. In such, the key to survival is not reacting quickly to a ton of information, but facing a simple and grim situation and conserving life and missiles. This is truly a game of extremes, good for players who want something new with a good challenge. I give it 8 out of 10.
